Emilia Pérez follows four remarkable women in Mexico, each searching for their own happiness
Cartel leader Emilia calls on Rita, an underappreciated lawyer, to help her fake her death so she can finally live authentically as her true self. Karla Sofía Gascón talks about the two years of preparation that led to this challenging role in Jacques Audiard’s film and the two extremes of her own personality that she had to play as Emilia and Manitas. Dalmais), Clément Ducol and Jacques Audiard Starring Zoe Saldana. But I really appreciate the combination of excellent singing, acting, and an original story with a moral backdrop that this film provides. The fact that this film also deals with the life and attempted transformation of a transgender character also gets my applause, including the performance of Gascon, who had to learn a Mexican accent (since he is from Spain), not to mention the portrayal of a man and a woman at the extreme ends of the spectrum, from drug lord to caring wife, father to mother. The wife not knowing the difference is beyond the pale, but such is life. I am glad that this film and its performers received the attention they richly deserved at Cannes. Kudos!
