In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s routine is turned upside down when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city to be intimate with her boyfriend. The first Indian film to screen in competition at Cannes in 30 years. All We Imagine As Light is a beautiful and poetic tale of love, friendship and self-discovery from Indian director Payal Kapadia, about two nurses living in Mumbai who see a small ripple of events ripple into their otherwise routine lives. I really loved the film’s color palettes, first blues, then reds and greens. It’s a representation of city life and urban loneliness. Its delicate soundtrack, the pacing and the characters. It feels like sitting at home on a rainy day, looking out the window and seeing a rainbow form from a shy ray of sunshine filtering through the clouds. A fleeting moment of magic.
