Nana composed by Manuel de Falla
Synopsis
Buried memories of the Spanish Civil War are revealed when a woman searches for the remains of her grandfather’s father and discovers the story of an idealistic young teacher in Tarragona. I felt lucky to find this film on a Singapore Airlines flight!
It tells the story of a beautiful progressive teacher, a follower of the little-known and rather revolutionary “Frienet Method”, who tries it out in a small village school in rural Spain
Bad timing! She meets the local priest, an authoritarian man who died in a fire, and is subsequently attacked by Franco’s future authoritarian government and the troops in the wake of the Spanish Civil War.
I found it very moving and a great testament to the humanity and spirit of this teacher
She is beaten, brought almost lifeless in front of her young students, then murdered and her body thrown on the ground, never to be found. The film rediscovers his story as the granddaughter of one of his students tries to find her great-grandfather’s own burial in a mass grave.
Unfortunately, the "true story" book it is based on does not yet appear to be available in English
It deserves more attention and screening on the arthouse circuit at least in the UK, Europe and where I live in Australia.
