Remake of La Talpa (2020)
Charles, a retired man, finds a new lease on life when he answers a private investigator’s ad and becomes a mole in a secret investigation into a nursing home. Based on the Chilean documentary “El Agente Topo”. Writing a review of this show requires familiarity with the context and content.
Having three parents dealing with the challenges of assisted living made it all the more enjoyable and more touching
Ted Danson plays an 80-year-old widower (Charles) who is struggling to establish a new routine after his wife dies from dementia-related health issues. In a series of classic sitcom plot devices, Charles lands a job as an undercover detective at an assisted living facility (what used to be called a “nursing home”) to solve a jewelry theft. Her boss, Lilah Richcreek Estrada as Julie, is a black-and-white, anything-goes woman to solve the case, a sarcasm to Danson’s kind and square Charles.
The two are quickly put at odds with the structure of the facility
director (well played by Stephanie Beatriz as Didi), Charles’ daughter Emily (Mary Elizabeth Ellis), and the various residents and their many silly problems. There are several poorly conceived jokes about the older women being lecherous that don’t fit with the rest of the stories, and the outrageously disrespectful (and interchangeable) stories of Charles’ daughter’s three teenage sons are distracting and throwaway. The best parts are Charles’ slow immersion into his new community with some social connections with other residents, especially Caleb, played by Stephen McKinley Henderson.
The awkward banter between Charles and Chief Julie is funny
Also funny are the jokes and comments about assisted living and the things that happen there. And while daughter Emily’s family life isn’t all that interesting, it does make for a couple of great scenes between her and Charles in later episodes. The conclusion isn’t all that hard to figure out (who stole what, and what will happen to Charles), but the sentimental bits of Charles’s awakening and acceptance of his wife’s death are very serviceable.
Overall, I recommend it, especially to viewers in their late forties and beyond
There are a few small parts played by older stars (Sally Struthers, Veronica Cartwright) that might make older viewers smile, but they’re mostly wasted on meaningless jokes about old people and sex.
